Reusable Milk Keg System Replaces Single-Use Bottles

Featured in ThePackHub’s Innovation Zone, Australian company The Udder Way has developed a reusable stainless-steel milk keg system designed to reduce reliance on single-use plastic milk bottles within cafés, foodservice operations and selected retail environments.

The system uses 18-litre (4.8-gallon) stainless-steel kegs that integrate with dispensing equipment already familiar to many foodservice operators. Rather than delivering milk in multiple single-use containers, milk can be dispensed directly from the keg, creating a refill and return model that keeps packaging in circulation for repeated use.

Once emptied, the kegs are collected, cleaned, sanitised, refilled and returned to service, establishing a closed-loop system focused on reuse rather than disposal. The model is particularly suited to hospitality environments where large volumes of milk are consumed and where operational processes can accommodate returnable packaging systems.

Unlike packaging innovations that focus primarily on lightweighting or material reduction, this approach centres on eliminating single-use packaging altogether. Stainless steel was selected for its durability, longevity and ability to withstand repeated cleaning and refilling cycles while maintaining food safety standards.

The closed dispensing system also helps reduce product handling and aligns with beverage dispensing infrastructure already widely used throughout cafés and foodservice venues. Beyond hospitality settings, The Udder Way is trialling the concept within selected supermarket locations, allowing consumers to refill their own reusable milk containers.

As brands and retailers continue to explore packaging circularity, refill and reuse models are attracting increasing attention as a way of reducing packaging waste while maintaining product quality and convenience.
