How many of us own a reusable cup but don’t actually have it with us when we need it? (Or is that just me?)
I spotted this innovation in the pages of ThePackHub’s Innovation Zone this week and thought it was an interesting take on that problem.
Australian company Lydy has developed a reusable silicone lid that fits multiple takeaway cup sizes. Unlike carrying a reusable cup everywhere, the lid comes with a small pouch that can be attached to a bag or keyring, making it easy to have on hand whenever you need it.
The flexible silicone design works across different cup sizes, offering a practical way to replace disposable lids without requiring consumers to carry an entire reusable cup.
Reducing the Friction Around Reuse
I already own a reusable cup, but on many days I either forget it or I’m carrying a smaller bag and it just isn’t practical to take. That’s where I can see something like this fitting in. It’s compact, portable and designed to work across different takeaway cup sizes, so it could remove some of the friction around reuse.
For me, that’s what makes this interesting. Rather than asking consumers to completely change their behaviour, it makes a more sustainable option easier to adopt.
Small Changes Can Still Make a Difference
I wonder if innovations like this could act as a bridge towards more reusable behaviour. Yes, the drink may still be served in a single-use cup, but reducing the need for disposable lids would still be a positive step while making reuse easier for more people.
Packaging innovation isn’t always about creating entirely new materials or formats. Sometimes it’s about identifying everyday pain points and designing simple solutions that encourage better habits.
