Alkelux, a startup based in Sardinia, Italy, has developed a natural antimicrobial nanomaterial additive made from liquorice processing waste, offering a sustainable breakthrough in active food packaging. Originating from research at the University of Sassari, the innovation is designed to extend the shelf life of fresh produce such as strawberries and blueberries without the use of synthetic preservatives.

The additive is entirely natural, metal-free, water-soluble, and compatible with both conventional plastic films and compostable materials. Its design allows for easy integration into existing industrial production lines, enabling broad adoption across the fresh produce sector without the need for costly retooling.
A standout feature of the innovation is its photo-activity. When exposed to sunlight or artificial light, the nanomaterial’s antimicrobial performance is significantly enhanced. This feature allows the packaging to more effectively suppress the growth of bacteria, moulds, and viruses compared to traditional materials.
Circular Economy Approach with Proven Results
By repurposing liquorice waste from food processing, Alkelux’s solution not only contributes to extending product freshness but also supports waste reduction and circular economy principles. Initial trials have demonstrated that the material can extend the shelf life of packaged fruits by at least one week, which plays a crucial role in reducing food waste throughout the supply chain.
