Featured in ThePackHub’s Innovation Zone, DS Smith, headquartered in London, has joined forces with Copenhagen-based RE-ZIP and France’s RAJA Group to launch the Reuse Fast Track programme, a European initiative designed to help e-commerce brands trial reusable packaging at commercial scale.
Co-financed through the European Union’s LIFE Programme, the 12-month initiative aims to remove many of the barriers that businesses face when adopting reusable packaging systems. Rather than simply supplying reusable packs, the programme provides participating brands with access to an end-to-end support model covering packaging deployment, return logistics, performance monitoring and customer engagement.
Initially focused on French e-commerce businesses operating in sectors including cosmetics, apparel and FMCG, the programme will select 20 brands to implement reusable fibre-based packaging without requiring significant upfront investment beyond the packaging itself. Deployment is scheduled to begin in France during September 2026.
A central element of the initiative is RE-ZIP’s digital tracking platform, which monitors the movement of each reusable packaging unit throughout its lifecycle. By collecting data on circulation, return rates and customer participation, participating businesses will be able to assess operational performance under real market conditions while identifying opportunities to optimise their reuse systems.
Alongside the technology platform, brands will receive practical support covering supply chain integration, consumer communication campaigns and shared performance benchmarking. The programme also includes collaborative workshops where participants can compare results and exchange best practice as reusable packaging systems evolve.
Turning Reuse into Reality
While reusable packaging has attracted growing interest across e-commerce, successful implementation depends on much more than the packaging itself. Return logistics, customer participation, tracking technology and operational integration all play a critical role in determining whether a system can be scaled successfully.
By combining reusable fibre-based packaging with digital monitoring and structured implementation support, the Reuse Fast Track programme aims to generate valuable real-world data that could help accelerate wider adoption across the European e-commerce sector.
ThePackHub’s View
Many reuse initiatives focus on developing the packaging, but successful implementation depends equally on the surrounding infrastructure. This programme recognises that challenge by bringing together packaging suppliers, logistics expertise and digital tracking into a single support framework. The learnings generated could provide valuable insight into how reusable e-commerce systems can move beyond pilot projects and towards broader commercial adoption.
