Featured in ThePackHub’s Innovation Zone, the patented UK-developed design is manufactured under licence by Turkish corrugated packaging producer Ankutsan Packaging. Rather than introducing a new packaging material, EcoCurve uses structural engineering to reduce the amount of corrugated board required for each box.
Curved design reduces material use
The most visible difference is the box geometry. EcoCurve moves away from the conventional square pizza box, using a curved structure designed to deliver comparable performance while requiring less material.
The reduction in board use is approximately 10%. This enables smaller and lighter corrugated blanks to be used in manufacturing while retaining the strength and functionality required of the finished pizza box.
For a high-volume packaging format such as takeaway pizza boxes, reducing material at an individual pack level has the potential to produce more significant cumulative savings when applied across large production volumes.
The approach also illustrates how material reduction does not necessarily require a change of substrate. In this case, the focus is on redesigning the structure to make more efficient use of the existing corrugated material.
Smaller blanks could affect logistics
Reducing the dimensions and weight of each blank may have implications beyond the amount of board consumed during production.
Smaller blanks could allow more units to be accommodated within a given transport or warehouse space, depending on the existing logistics configuration. This could potentially affect storage and transportation requirements across the supply chain.
Importantly for adoption, EcoCurve has been designed for integration into established corrugated packaging manufacturing and food-service operations. The format does not require new production equipment or changes to standard handling procedures.
This is a practical consideration for a packaging format produced and used at scale. A material-saving redesign may be easier to introduce if manufacturers and food-service operators can continue using their existing equipment and processes.
Structural efficiency in a familiar format
ThePackHub’s view is that a 10% reduction in corrugated board could create meaningful material savings when multiplied across high-volume pizza packaging operations.
The key will be maintaining the strength, handling performance and functionality expected from a conventional pizza box. If those requirements can be met consistently, the design provides an example of how structural changes to an established pack format can reduce material use without changing the underlying packaging material or production infrastructure.
