The packaging industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation, where innovation is no longer defined by bold aesthetics or disruptive formats, but by subtle, systematic change. Insights from a recent FuturePrint Podcast – where FuturePrint Co-Founder and Director Marcus Timson spoke with our founder, Paul Jenkins – reveal a sector increasingly shaped by regulation, sustainability demands, and the realities of scalability.
Drawing on data from more than 11,000 packaging innovations, Paul highlights a clear shift: innovation is becoming quieter, more systematic, and deeply rooted in environmental responsibility rather than consumer-facing novelty.

Where packaging innovation was once driven by visual differentiation and marketing impact, today it is overwhelmingly influenced by sustainability. According to Paul, approximately 90% of packaging innovations now have a sustainability component.
This shift reflects a broader industry realignment. Sustainability is no longer a competitive advantage – it is a baseline requirement. As a result, innovation has moved behind the scenes, focusing on material reduction, recyclability, and compliance rather than overt consumer appeal.
Three key trends are shaping this new landscape:
Paperisation: The transition from plastic to fibre-based materials continues across categories, although momentum may slow as functionality and environmental trade-offs become more apparent.
Recycling and Recycled Content: Driven by legislation such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, recycling is now embedded in business strategy.
Reduction: Reducing material usage remains one of the most effective ways to lower both costs and environmental impact, though technical limits are increasingly being reached.
Regulation Redefines the Innovation Playbook
A defining feature of this new era is the growing influence of regulation. Packaging development is no longer guided solely by creativity or market trends, but by compliance requirements.
This has led to a more cautious approach to innovation. Brands are prioritising solutions that meet legislative demands while still delivering functional and commercial value. Innovation is increasingly about what is permissible, not just what is possible.
Smart Technologies and Digital Print Find New Purpose
Despite tighter constraints, innovation continues to evolve – particularly in digital and connected technologies.
Connected packaging, enabled by QR codes, is gaining traction as a low-impact way to enhance consumer engagement, offering traceability, storytelling, and authentication without adding environmental burden.
Digital printing is experiencing a strategic repositioning. Rather than mass customisation campaigns, Paul shares that brands are now leveraging digital print for:
- Localised product variations
- Short-run experimentation
- Smarter market testing
This shift supports a move towards “intelligent production,” allowing brands to respond more flexibly to fragmented markets.
The Challenge of Scaling Sustainable Innovation
While innovation is abundant, scaling remains a critical hurdle. Emerging materials such as seaweed films, protein barriers, and mycelium-based packaging offer promise but face challenges in cost, performance, and supply chain integration.
Similarly, refill and reuse models – long considered key to sustainability – have yet to achieve widespread adoption due to economic and logistical barriers.
Paul emphasises that success in this space depends on aligning environmental benefits with commercial viability. Without this balance, even the most promising innovations struggle to move beyond pilot stages.
Startups Lead the Next Wave of Innovation
In this complex landscape, startups are emerging as critical drivers of innovation. Free from legacy constraints, they are able to experiment with new materials, systems, and technologies.
While many will face funding and scalability challenges, their role in originating new ideas is essential. Larger organisations, in turn, must focus on integrating and scaling these innovations within increasingly regulated environments.

Looking beyond the packaging sector for inspiration and embracing collaboration will also be key.
As regulation continues to shape the industry, success will depend less on individual breakthroughs and more on collective capability. Rather than headline-grabbing disruption, the focus is now on refinement, efficiency, and long-term impact.
The most powerful innovations can often be the least visible.
