Shya Hsin Packaging Industry Patents Cosmetic Compact with Flexible Seal for Easier Opening

Chinese packaging company Shya Hsin Packaging Industry has developed a proposed cosmetic compact closure designed to make containers easier to open and close while maintaining an airtight seal. The concept, featured in ThePackHub’s Patent Zone, is detailed in US patent application US 2026/0305792 A1, published on 8 October 2026.

The design addresses a familiar challenge with cosmetic compacts: achieving a secure seal to protect the contents without making the container difficult to open. It introduces a flexible sealing ring that can deform during operation, reducing the force required to open and close the compact.

Flexible Sealing Ring Reduces Opening Resistance

The proposed container consists of three main components: an inner cap, an intermediate ring and a powder pan that holds the cosmetic product. A soft, flexible sealing ring is attached to the inner cap and forms an airtight connection with the intermediate ring when the container is closed.

The key feature is a specially shaped relief groove within the flexible sealing ring. As the cap is opened or closed, the sealing material can compress and deform into this groove rather than resisting movement.

The sealing ring is also softer than the intermediate ring against which it seals. This difference in material flexibility allows the ring to compress sufficiently to form a tight seal while reducing the resistance experienced by the user.

The mechanism is intended to provide a more manageable opening and closing action without compromising the seal around the cosmetic product.

Potential Applications in Cosmetic Packaging

The proposed closure could be relevant to packaging for pressed powders, foundations and similar cosmetic products where protection of the contents and ease of access are important.

Rather than changing the overall compact format, the invention focuses on the interaction between the closure components. The flexible seal and relief groove are designed to address opening resistance while retaining the airtight fit needed to protect the product.

The patent application describes a proposed technical solution, and commercial implementation has not been confirmed.

Vanessa’s View: Balancing Convenience and Recyclability

Vanessa Newcomb, commenting for ThePackHub, highlights the practical appeal of the design while raising a question about its potential implications for recycling.

We’ve all struggled to open a cosmetic compact with a really tight seal. I like how this clever design balances easy opening with the airtight protection needed to keep the product in good condition. My question would be whether the different materials in the sealing mechanism make recycling more difficult.

The use of materials with different levels of flexibility is central to the proposed mechanism. However, the patent overview does not establish how easily these components could be separated or processed through existing recycling systems.
