Carbon Literacy Training for the Packaging Sector

Understanding carbon is becoming an increasingly important part of making informed packaging decisions – and building Carbon Literacy is an important starting point for creating meaningful change. This accredited Carbon Literacy Training course was developed by Ecosurety and is delivered by ThePackHub under licence.

While much of the packaging policy and producer responsibility landscape continues to focus on recyclability, the carbon impact of packaging presents a much broader challenge. This course helps bridge that knowledge gap, giving packaging professionals a clearer understanding of climate change, carbon emissions and the role that both individuals and organisations can play in reducing their impact.

Ecosurety has already delivered Carbon Literacy training to a wide range of packaging producers who collectively place nearly half a million tonnes of packaging onto the UK market each year, demonstrating the scale of opportunity for informed action across the sector.

Throughout the training, you’ll explore the science and impacts of climate change, understand carbon footprints, Net Zero and emissions scopes, and consider how these principles apply specifically to packaging.

You’ll also look at practical examples of action already being taken across the industry, before considering where you and your organisation can make a meaningful difference.

By the end of the training, you’ll have a stronger understanding of carbon and climate change, how these issues relate to packaging and your organisation, and the actions you can take to help reduce emissions.

Audience

This training is designed for professionals who want to build their understanding of carbon and climate change within the context of packaging.

You don’t need to be a sustainability or carbon specialist. The course provides an accessible foundation and is relevant to professionals across brand owners, retailers, packaging suppliers and other organisations throughout the packaging value chain.

This Carbon Literacy training will cover:

  • The foundations of climate change
  • Climate justice
  • Understanding carbon footprints
  • Net Zero and Scopes 1, 2 and 3
  • The implications of climate change for businesses
  • The carbon impacts of packaging
  • Practical tools and approaches
  • Examples from the packaging sector

The course is designed to build carbon knowledge and support meaningful action rather than recommend particular packaging materials or formats. Packaging choices need to be assessed according to their individual circumstances and requirements.

From Learning to Action

Carbon Literacy is about more than understanding the terminology.

Throughout the training, you’ll be encouraged to consider how what you’re learning relates to your own role and organisation, helping you identify meaningful actions you can take beyond the course.

Successful completion of the training and the required action pledges provides the opportunity to become certified as Carbon Literate through The Carbon Literacy Project.
