Marcadiferencia Patents Reusable Food Wrap with Liquid Containment Rim

Spanish applicant Marcadiferencia has developed a reusable food wrapping concept designed to contain liquids released by food while helping keep the contents elevated and dry. Featured in ThePackHub’s Patent Zone, the design combines a perimeter ridge, raised internal ribs and an integrated closure system within a single-piece reusable wrap.

Published on 15 July 2026, the patent addresses a familiar challenge with foods that release moisture during storage or transport. Rather than allowing the product to remain in contact with accumulated liquid, the proposed structure creates separation between the food and the base of the wrapper.

The concept is intended for fresh produce, meat and other foods prone to releasing moisture, offering a reusable alternative to disposable absorbent packaging solutions.

Separating Food from Released Moisture

The wrapper uses a laminated base surrounded by a perimeter ridge. This raised edge is designed to act as a barrier, helping contain liquid released by the food rather than allowing it to escape from the wrapping.

Within the perimeter, raised ribs extend from the base surface to create an elevated platform for the food. Any released moisture can therefore collect beneath the product, reducing direct contact between the food and accumulated liquid.

The combination of containment and elevation is an interesting aspect of the patent. Instead of relying on a separate absorbent component to manage moisture, the proposed wrap uses its physical geometry to separate the food from released liquid.

Integrated Closure for Repeated Use

The patent also describes a closure system built into the wrapper itself. Internal flaps on two opposing sides are designed to adhere to one another when folded, while parallel slots on the remaining sides allow the material to be tucked in and secured.

Elastic bands formed between these slots and the perimeter are intended to stretch as food is inserted, helping the wrapper accommodate its contents and maintain closure.

The single-piece construction uses materials such as silicone or TPU silicone. By combining the liquid-containment rim, raised food-supporting structure and closure mechanism in one design, the concept is intended to provide a reusable food wrapping format without requiring a separate absorbent pad.

Reuse Depends on Performance Over Time

Vanessa Newcomb of ThePackHub sees the development as particularly relevant in the context of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), where reuse forms part of the wider regulatory landscape.

“The raised design could help keep food fresher by separating it from released liquid,” she says.

However, the potential environmental benefit of a reusable format depends on more than simply replacing a disposable pack. As Vanessa notes, the wrap would need to be easy to clean, durable and reused enough times to deliver a genuine environmental benefit.

Those considerations are particularly relevant for packaging designed to come into direct contact with foods that release liquids. How the wrapper performs through repeated cycles of use and cleaning would therefore be important to the concept’s practical application.

As a patent, the design represents a proposed technical solution rather than confirmation that the wrapper will be commercialised. Its combination of food elevation, liquid containment and an integrated closure nevertheless illustrates one approach to adapting reusable wrapping to the practical demands of moisture-releasing foods.
