Just East (Lieferando in Germany) has joined forces with Huhtamaki and Xampla to introduce a groundbreaking plastic-free packaging innovation for food delivery. In a move that signals a major shift toward sustainability in the takeaway industry, Lieferando is now offering restaurant partners a new range of folding cartons coated with Xampla’s Morro – the world’s first plant-based, plastic-free coating developed specifically for food packaging.
This innovative packaging solution, already available via the Lieferando Partner Webshop, is fully recyclable, biodegradable, and compliant with single-use plastic directives. The initial rollout sees 500 trial boxes distributed to select restaurant partners in Hamburg, Essen, Munich, and Wiesloch.
Key Features of the New Takeaway Boxes:
Plastic-Free and Biodegradable:
Morro Coating, created by UK materials experts Xampla, is made entirely from plants without the use of harmful chemicals. The coating delivers the same grease- and moisture-resistant performance as traditional plastic linings—without the environmental damage.
Recyclable and Heat Retentive:
Produced by global packaging leader Huhtamaki, the cartons are crafted from sustainably sourced corrugated paper, offering structural rigidity and insulation suitable for a wide variety of dishes, including greasy and saucy meals.
Pilot Programme Success and Industry Impact:
Building on successful initial trials by Just Eat for Business in the UK, the German pilot paves the way for wider adoption across Lieferando’s network of 41,000 restaurant partners.
Jaz Rabadia, Global Head of Responsible Business & Sustainability at Just Eat Takeaway.com, emphasised the company’s sustainability goals:
We are always looking for opportunities to collaborate with innovative companies who share the goal of addressing single-use plastic waste with us.
Alexandra French, CEO of Xampla, added:
Morro Coating is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing packaging processes, offering a powerful alternative to plastic. Together, we are setting a new standard for environmentally responsible food packaging.
Local restaurant partners are already seeing the benefits. Hammad Butt, owner of Pizza Avanti in Wiesloch, commented:
We see that the demand for environmentally friendly packaging is constantly increasing. The new boxes expand our options for packaging a wider range of dishes plastic-free.
A Broader Step Towards Sustainable Food Delivery
